Thomas Mann (1875-1955)

The German novelist, winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize in literature, was born on this day in 1875.  The following two-diagram puzzle conceals something Mann said about the end of life.

(Note:  The second diagram involves a wraparound or “hidden adjacency”:  Even though they do not appear to be adjacent, V and R are adjacent — on the back side of the Quipto rack.)
